Club History Dromtarriffe GAA

( some basic information – gathered through information from Pat Murphy Book A view from Mount Hillary and Tadgh O Muimhneachain.)

1887 – In 1887 a tournament was held in Banteer, the following teams took part. Dromtarriffe 1st and 2nd teams, Banteer, Kanturk, Kilbrin, and Donoughmore. Dromtarriffe 1st and 2nd teams qualified for the finaland the first team won after a hard tough game. Dromtarriffe also had their own pipe band in 1887 whom along with the  Kanturk pipe band entertained the crowds at the Banteer sports in that year

1888 – this was the year where the County Board spilt  with 40 clubs leaving the county board to form the O Connor Board under the presidency of Fr O Connor and the O Brien Board under the presidency of Fr Carver.

Dromtarriffe 1st and 2nd teams again took part in the Banteer tournament held in June 1888. Dromtarriffe 1st beat Glantane 0-3 to 0-1, Dromtarriffe 2nd beat Banteer ,( who had already defeated Ballycough), on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-1. Dromtarriffe won the toss, and in the course of a few minutes scored a point, which was soon succeeded by another. Banteer for their part were less experienced than the Dromtarriffe men , "being their first trial in the field" continously drove the ball over their own end line, giving the Dromtarriffe men numerous free kicks from the 40 yards line., which in most cases they turned to their best advantage and at the call of half time Dromtarriffe had scored 2 goals and 3 points to no score for Banteer. On the change of sides Banteer commnenced with a point, Dromtarriffe did not register any further scores in this half . Dromtarriffe 1st and Donoughmore"Michael O Dywers" played a match in the tournament 26-7-1888, The weather was showery during the earlier part of the day but by the time play commenced, the clouds cleared off in this respect, but when the game failed to finish,  Dromtarriffe were awarded the match, however the county board ordered a replay.

Dromtarriffe 1st and Dromtarriffe 2nd met in the final of the tournament on the last Sunday in May 1888 – whih was won by Dromtarriffe 1st team. A huge crowd turned up for the game in horse drawn vehicles or on foot and witnessed a very tight game when one part of the parish tried every trick to oust their comrades from victory.

Dromtarriffe beat Castlemagner in the first round of the North Cork section. They went onto win the North Cork section of the county championship and went onto beat Lisgoold 1-1 to nil on April 15th in the first round of the county championship . In the county semi final they met the famous Dohenys who were noted for their sheer strength and determination but the men from Dromtarriffe overpowered them and beat them. In the county final Dromtarriffe drew with Lees at Long Meadow (Town Park) Mallow at full time 0-1 each and against the advise of local priest Fr Browne, Dromtarriffe played an extra quarter of an hour and lost the county final 0.3 – 0.1.  ( Dromtarriffe were known at this period as Rough and Tumble men)

Report on the County Final 17-7-1893

Dromtarriffe football team yesterday in the Park, established their claim to the football championship of Cork County under Gaelic rules. They met and defeated Castlematyr who a fortnight ago beat Clonakilty in the semi final. Dromtarriffe had for many years being  trying for the championship and their persistent efforts have at last been rewarded and they today stand forth as the premier football team of the county. But their victory was not a bloodless one from start to finish they had to contest every inch of ground in stubbon tenacity and the scoring was so evenly divided that it was found necessary to play an extra half an hour. A better matched pair of team it would be difficult to get but the long staying power coupled with a bit of hard luck on their opponents side stood to the champions and in the end they get the best of of an unusually long and stiff match. The weather was just perfect for the occasion and the sod could not be in bettre condition. Dromtarriffe won the toss and play to the Blackrock end. Dromtarriffe scored the first point after dominating the first ten minutes. Castlematyr then equalised. Dromtarriffe fought back and scored a point before half time. Castlematyr upped their game in the second half and their dominet play saw them score two points to one to lead by a point. Dromtarriffe were on the offensive for most of the second half and only twice threatened the Castlematyr line , the first wassimply an over but the second went through the posts for a point to tie the game just before the final whistle. The game was now tied at 3 points each. This necessiated the playing od an additional half hour. Castlematyr pressed hard but failed to yied a score missing many scoring opportunities. Dromtarriffe stuck to their task and were successful in scoring a point. As the game progressed, Dromtarriffe showed themsleves to be fresher and though Castlematyr made desperate efforts to score they were not in it. They played gamely but were overmatched at the finish. Before time was finally called, Dromtarriffe scored another pointand when the referees whistle sounded, Dromtarriffe were two points ahead the score being Dromtarriffe 5 points  Castlematyr 3 points.  Goal umpires for Dromtarriffe M O Toole and M Keeffe. Young Irelanders played with the wind in the first half and led 1-1 to 0-1 at half time. Dromtarriffe turned around in the second half with the wind and sun at their backs and scored a point Thirteen minutes into the game they scored a goal whihc was disallowed. As a result pandemonium followedand the match was abandoned as at the time Young Irelands held the lead 1-1 to 0-2. It is said that Young Islanders were taunting Dromtarriffe about the North Cork that were involved in the 1798 rebellion  and Dromtarriffe could take no more . A Dromtarriffe player took his own revenge and knocked the Young Irelanders player to the ground 50 yards from where the ball was ( in an off the ball incident) . The corwd then got invovled in the melee. When order was restored the referee ordered both players involved in the first incident to be replaced. Dromtarriffe refused this request and their captain John O Keeffe called his team off the field. When Dromtarriffe failed to return to the field, Young Irelanders were awarded the match. Dromtarriffe wore green jerseys with gold sashes. Dromtarriffe also had two goals disallowed.

1911- 1930 No reports of Dromtarriffe Football for these years. The follwing includes the historical and other higlights from these years

In 1916 , 1920 & 1921 Dromtarriffe men took part in  the ambushes at Clonbanin and Rathcoole and with the dawn of freedom from foreign rule and peace as if a long winter were over and spring had once more come round a new life began to stiff the football fields of the Parish.

This quote is directly taken from Tadgh O Muimhneacháin book Dromtarriffe a History. - futher quotes are continued in the years

1921-1930.

1921 – Rathcoole ambush .Previous to the ambush onApril 1st the Rathcoole Colum cut the track at Fortgrady, and blew up a railway bridge at Bolomore, also brdiges at Collins  Knockbrack and Taaffes Curraraigue in an effort to prevent tans from gaining access accross the area. June 1921-   Men from the local Colum as well as troops from Kanturk and Mallow engaged in battle at Rathcoole . The Rathcoole camp ordered men to gather in the Rathcoole area on the night of June 15th.It was planned to place six mines on the roadway and ambush the tans that mde two daily journeys to Millstreet from Banteer. The railway line between Millstreet and Banteer having been previously blown up the men had to travel by road for their supplies.

120 men assembled in Rathcoole on the night of 15th June and plced the mines on the roadway. On the 16th June the soldiers were allowed to pass and return in the morning but in the evening on their way back from Millstreet the local volunteers set off the mines trapping the soldiers in the area. A fierce battle took place between the tans and the volunteers resulting in the deaths of 12 tans and about 15-20 injured. There were no loss to Irish life. After the battle, the auxillaries cordoned a for mile radius of Rathcoole and carried out attacks on many local men giving some of them severe beatings.

On July 1st a lorry load of tans stopped at Rathcoole bridge and approached a local house where two local men Syl Murphy and Bernard Moynihan were having tea. The two men tried to escape from the house but Bernard Moynihan was shot dead. Shortly afterwards in a reprisal the locals burned out Bolomore wood in retaliation.

Local schools and their teachers-

Teachers such as Tom O Connor in Dromagh, John Cashell in Derrinagree and especially Seán Ó Murchú in Rathcoole stirred the imaginations of their pupils with stories of glories of the past and starry - eyed youngsters dreamt of being part of future glory.

Seán Ó Murchú , the teacher in Rathcoole took a very great interest and soon his pupils were victorious in matches at feiseanna while others won trophies for singing and receiting in the Irish Language . Among the more famous of the pupils in Rathcoole School at that time were:

Miah Murphy , his brother Jacko. Dick Harnedy, Matt John Murphy, Den Coleman, Paddy Coleman , Dick Barrett and Tom Corbett. These were soon joined by great players from Derrinagree, Dromagh and Derrygallon areas such as Paddy Neville, Andrew Barret, Dan Joe Buckley, Dio Curtin , to form a team that brought a second golden Football Era  to Dromtarriffe.

1922 – Rathcoole played Charleville.

1924  At the Kilcorney feis Jerome O Keeffe (Curraraigue) beat  Ned Scannell in an U14 race.

1928 On the 29th July 1928 a local athlete Dr Pat O Callaghan (with many Dromtarrriffe connections) who an Olympic gold medal in the hammer event in Amsterdam with a throw of 168 feet 7 and a half inches. This was a great achievement for O Callaghan the 22 year old from Kanturk as America really fancied their chances in this event. Dr Pats brother Con also competed in Amsterdam in the long jump. There was a huge welcome home for Dr Pat in Kanturk for his homecoming. Dr Pat retained his gold medal at the Los Angles Olympics in 1932 despite finding it very hard to adapt to the concrete and found his spikes too long and was unable to get sufficient grip to get a third turn in swinging the hammer. Dr Pat smartly set about  filing down his spikes. With just one throw left Dr Pat was in second place with his world title on the line. He entered the circle now more suitably spiked, he steadied himself for a moment and then spun around, two, three, four times and the hammer shot away to break the earth beyond all the other competitors and so Dr Pat retained his gold medal, before the 80,000 that were present. Dr Pat was unable to attend the 1936 Olympics as the N.C.A.I was in dispute and sent no team.

 CAMOGIE

In the mid twenties Dromtarriffe had a very useful Camogie team that won many trophies.  . Their Captain , Peg Hartnett from Lisnacon, was an outstanding player and played Camogie both in England and Ireland. Her position on the field was centre-field but she roamed all over the pitch. Pat O Connor Dromahoe , a most faithful follower of the football team , was also an enthaustic supporter of the Camogie. On one occassion as Peg Harnett had once more roamed far from her allotted position, Pat O Connor was heard to have remarked that he " would have to get a fetters for Peg" Girls who played Camogie for Dromtarriffe:  Sheila Murphy, Margaret Murphy from Rathcoole, Mabell & Ciss Cronin, Grace Buckley, Margaret O Driscoll, Peg & Han Hartnett, Mary Murphy , Moyra & Han Daly, Bridie & Joan O Keeffe, May Buckley, Peggy O Connell & Mona Burton.

A Song was penned as a result:

Dromtarriffe v Duhallow August 1932.

I've seen some hurling matches, full

Of trills and full of dashes.

Twist the champions of Kilkenny

Tipperary, Cork and Clare

I've seen the men from Kerry, like

Bees at a Blackberry

Flitting, dancing, shooting, round

The goalposts of Kildare

In North Cork fields of fame, I've

Lately seen a game

A contest that has left them all

Severly flat and hollow

When Dromtarriffe green and gold

The colours true and old

Were victorious o'er the pick of all

Duhallow

The captain John Joe Greene, no

Mighter man was seen

In defending and in breaking his

Opponenets every push.

And who could quicker be than

Ritchie Harandee

As he kept the backline busy, with

Every lighting rush

The Buckleys Den and Dan Joe

Quickly gave the ball the toe,

Thats ent it flying and hopping

Far accross the field.

And dashing Dio Curtin, the first to

Get a goal in

And Barrett to the bestman never

An inch would yield

The Coleman brothers knacky, Tim

Den and Jackie

Are a credit to Dromtarriffe, the

Land that gave them birth.

The Murphy' s Matt and Dennie

Sounder no men can be

Never a man could shake them, or

Bring them to the earth

Pat Neville and Matt Hickey, better

Could no kickers be

You'll think that in the parish, the

Ball could not be found.

Lucey and O Shaughnessy, swept the

Field so grand and free.

Their opponents could not hold them

As they glided o'er the ground.

Thus always did Dromtarriffe team

The men who are and who have been

Uphold the parish honour and the

Ancient green and gold,

May they never stop or sway but

Advance triumphant on their way

Till they reach All Ireland honours

As their fathers did of old.

Should they win or should they fail

They show the spirit of the gael

Despite opposing tactis as we see

Then every day

To our land will come fresh fame

Exaulted will be her name

Till realised are the ideals of

Noble G.A.A

As it was the attendance did not exceed 300, the smallest during that season. The play was well up to championship form, and though very scientific was contested in so strenous a manner that the interest was maintained up to the last minute. The youthful ebullition displayed by both teams seemed to seem they did not care in what direction the ball went so long as they got away with it. There was an expection to this in the playing of five or six boys whom it was later known they were college trained youths. The game opened with Dromtarriffe strongly pressing from the throw in. The ball was transferred to the Dromtarriffe territory, but the attackers, who throughout the game seemed to have a poor sense of direction, sent wide. The Corkman  Dromtarriffe Club notes -  Dromtarriffe celebrations

The scenes that greeted Dromtarriffe footballers on their championship win and the celebrations that followed were unprecented, The 21 year wait for the cup was the lonest in the clubs long and illustrious history . Over the decades the club had been used to winning the championship regually every decade the longest previous period was from 1959 to 1973. Understandably the recent return from the wildnerness allowed supporters to give vent to their feelings as a huge crowd turned up at the Sandpit House to greet the players who were introduced to the crowd.

Coach, Gerard O'Sullivan thanked the players for their efforts thoughout the year, and he thanked his fellow selectors , Davey and Frank for their committed effort in bringing back the Dick Harnedy Cup to Dromtarriffe.  He also paid tribute to the past coaches and selectors, who had moulded this team over the past number of years in particular Joe Murphy, John Pierce and John O Mahony and he hoped this week would be the beginning of greater things for the Dromtarriffe side.  The gathering was also addressed by the Presidant of the club, Andy Barrett, who said it was a greta day to be alive to witness this great Dromtarriffe victory. Vincent Collins, past chairman and lifelong supporter also addressed the large crowd and the celebration was rounded off by Dick O'Sullivan rendering " Twenty-one years".

This latest victory has thrown up a number of interesting comparisions as in 1974 Nicholas Murphy of the Fairfield had two sons Michael and Tony on the winning team and on this occasion Nicholas had two grandsons Jason and Trevor, sons of Mick who were team members. Continuing with the family connections throughout the decades, Michael O'Connell of Derrinagree and his cousins the Buckleys of Scagh continue their long involvement witht heir grandfather Mick Buckley was a memeber of the 1893 All Ireland football team.Incidently, John Murphy, captain of the team a native of Gneevguilla, is married to Mary Buckley, grand-daughter of the late Mick Buckley.  Another connection to the 1959 team were the Byrnes brothers , Dominic and Mike who are sons of Mick Byrnes of Knockcahill a member of that 1959 winning team. The panel also included Michael O'Keeffe Bolomore, brother of Dan Jo Rathcoole Post Office, who was a member of the 1973/74 teams. Michael John also created history in the fact that he captured both Duhallow medals this year – the hurling championship with Banteer and well as the football championship with Dromtarriffe.
